My Students

We have 196 students who live here on the island or are bused in due to their homes still not livable. Some of them live in RVs or FEMA trailers. Still they arrive every morning happy to be in school.

They are very thankful for the help that has been given to them from other schools.

In this picture a volunteer is helping them say thank you by making yarn rugs to give to each school in the donors school's colors.

My Project

Seeing hunger in a child's eye when trying to teach them is a reoccurring sight at our after school program. They need just a little nibble of fruit snacks, crackers and juice to get them through.

Since Hurricane Harvey many of these students are accustomed to not having food, a home, clothes, once treasured toys or their treasured family pet.

This little island of fisherman and shrimpers lost their livelihood when their vessels were crushed by Harvey's winds. Families dependent on tourist trade saw their jobs affected for years as the island tries to rebuild.

Our after school program gives enrichment of academics and stability to our youth but it does not address their little hunger pains after school.
