My students need 2 basketball hoops, a storage cart that consists of 10 basketballs, 10 footballs, 10 soccer balls, 10 jump ropes, and a basketball stencil kit.
Like many children throughout the country, my students are not taught the importance of exercise and a healthy diet. Many chronic health conditions are directly related to a lack of exercise and poor diet. Healthy living is a way of life that needs to be instilled in America's youth at a young age.
My school district is urban and has a high poverty level.
Ninety-five percent of my students are on free lunch or reduced lunch. As such, our district has the unique opportunity to feed the students and provide them with well balanced meals.
Also, our students playground currently consists of only eight working swings. As a result, their ability to exercise and learn the importance of sharing is severely restricted. With more options on the playground, my students will learn cooperative play and to share with one another. Often times, school is the only time that my students are taught basic skills that they will use in life. Exercise and a proper diet are just as important as learning to read and write.
My Project
I am asking for playground equipment such as balls, jump ropes, frisbees and basketball hoops to give my students and entire school of kindergarteners and first graders the opportunity to exercise and learn the importance of cooperative play! These materials will be the catalyst that jump starts my students' understanding of the importance of exercise and healthy eating.
These are skills and values that they will carry with them throughout their lives, and will eventually pass onto their own children. Students may even bring their knowledge home and pass it onto their siblings, or even their parents. My students will be able to play several different games with the materials that I am requesting. Many of the requested materials serve multiple purposes, and can be utilized by all of the students in my school.
These materials will drastically change my students lives for the better.
The materials will be used in conjunction with an educational initiative that teaches my students the importance of healthy eating and exercise. Also, my students will develop cooperative learning skills and learn the importance of sharing. These are skills that will benefit my students throughout their lives, and hopefully they will eventually pass these values onto their own children.
