My school district is urban and has a high poverty level. Ninety-five percent of my students are on free lunch or reduced lunch. As such, our district has the unique opportunity to feed the students and provide them with well balanced meals. Also, our students playground currently consists of only eight working swings. As a result, their ability to exercise and learn the importance of sharing is severely restricted. With more options on the playground, my students will learn cooperative play and to share with one another. Often times, school is the only time that my students are taught basic skills that they will use in life. Exercise and a proper diet are just as important as learning to read and write.
