Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At our high-poverty, urban K-8 school, my students learn all subjects in two languages, reading and writing in both English and Spanish. That means twice as much reading, twice as much writing, and twice as much thinking. It means we sometimes struggle for resources when the Spanish-language book is not available or is too expensive. When it's time to research about landmark Supreme Court cases or the use of drones in Afghanistan, they evaluate the credibility and potential bias of the source. Then they devour the information, often calling each other over -- "You've got to read this!"

These bilingual middle schoolers are curious, hilarious, and irrepressible; they want to know everything, and they rightly see themselves as leaders.

My students feel pride in their cultural heritage as well as their academic accomplishments. They act with empathy, and they are the kind of people to whom I am glad to entrust this world when I am older and dependent on the younger generation. I want to do anything I can to encourage their best qualities and play to their strengths, even as I try to help them improve their reading and writing skills.

My Project

If there is one thing that COVID has taught us all, it is the importance of safe and healthy learning environments. My students and I are so happy to be back in the classroom. This summer, the Spanish teacher and I created a beautiful new bilingual classroom library, complete with cushions and carpet and lighting. We have been back a little over a week now, and I see that there are two major needs in our room: a vacuum and drinking water.

If my students can breathe easily and drink water when they need it, then we can focus on the important work of joyfully reading and writing.

I want to keep our library clean and free from allergens, especially now that we have to keep our windows open for ventillation. As the ragweed blooms and the pollen flies, I want to make sure my students can curl up with their books on the rug and lose themselves in a story.

Because of a longstanding concern with leaded pipes, our school only has potable water in coolers - one per floor of the building. Students frequently have to go refill the pitcher in our classroom, and often when they do, they find all three floors are out of water, and they have to lug up a big jug from the basement. They are missing learning time just to be able to have a sip of water when they need it. A cooler in the room would mean that I could monitor when the jug needs changing, leaving students to just be students.

Clean air to breathe and clean water to drink. You can help make it happen for all the students in Room 211. Thank you!
