The cost of 60 junior toothbrushes and two toothbrush storage cases from Kaplan Learning Company, 3 boxes of small and 3 boxes of large latex gloves, 3 one-gallon Softsoap hand soap refills, 2 one-gallon Softsoap antibacterial soap refills, 3 16 ounce Lubriderm lotions, and 4 Scotch-Brite dishwands from Quill Corporation, and a hygiene puzzle from Nasco is $455, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.

I teach 3-6 year olds who either have disabilities or are “at-risk” for academic failure. On a daily basis we teach pre-academic skills such as letters, colors, shapes, and numbers. I believe it is also important to teach healthy hygiene habits to children. Many children enter our program at the age of three without the knowledge of how to brush their teeth or wash their hands! After breakfast everyday, we return to our classroom to brush our teeth. While this may not seem like an academic task, it is and it teaches many academic readiness skills. The children need to find the toothbrush with their name written on it. Next they stand in line and wait their turn for the sink. At the beginning of the year, teachers show the children the proper teeth brushing method. Once children have finished brushing their teeth, they again have to identify their name and place the toothbrush in the proper case. Aside from our teeth, we also frequently use the sink to wash our hands. In Pre-K we are constantly doing messy projects, playing outside, and playing in the water table. In order to do these activities and eat our meals the children wash their hands at least 8 times a day while they are at school! The bathroom soap supplied by the school is a good anti-bacterial germ killer, however, it also is very harsh on the children's skin. For this reason, I am requesting a supply of “Softsoap” moisturizing soap to make hand washing a little more “kid friendly” of a process! Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal!
