Healthy Hula Hooping

Help me give my students durable, weighted hula hoops to use at recess as an alternative to more competitive activities.

My Project

Students at my school need more choices during outdoor recess time. Hula hooping is a perfect recess activity at an elementary school. Students develop friendships by teaching each other how to hula hoop. Sometimes they have competitions to see who can hoop the longest. Students and teachers can enjoy this activity together and challenge each other to learn new hooping skills. Hooping is good exercise as well as great fun! Hooping together creates social connections that might not otherwise happen.

Hooping provides a different choice for students who want to exercise and have fun with their classmates in a non-competitive activity.

The benefits of hooping include exercise, the development of gross motor skills, strengthening relationships with both peers and teachers and the opportunity for cooperative play without the stress often caused by competing.

Most hoops available for purchase are inexpensive and are easily damaged. These weighted hoops are filled with water, and are made of durable plastic--they can last for many years. In a school of over 450 children, the hoops will get a lot of use and will provide many hours of happy hooping at recess!
