Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach seventh grade science and environmental science in an impoverished, urban community in the state of Michigan.

Like many children in urban areas, my students are struggling with childhood obesity. Due to safety and laziness, children are spending increasing amounts of time indoors and in front of the television set->moving much less. Due to poverty, fresh fruits and vegetables can be difficult to obtain->Eating poorly. This project will link up to a larger movement in our school to increase healthy habits (i.e. "Eat better, move more, and don't smoke" campaign). My classes would like to learn about healthy habits throughout the year and begin to integrate those ideas into our lives. This would include creating a "Salad Garden" where we will start the seeds indoors, transplant the seeds outdoors in the spring, care for the seedlings and plants, discuss various science concepts as we watch the plants grow (e.g. germination and genetics), and harvest our garden in the spring/summer. We hope to make our own salads to eat at the culmination of the school year (June 21) or summer school (early August).

The "Salad Garden" will provide the perfect opportunity for students to learn various scientific concepts, healthy eating habits, move more, get outdoors, and create a relationship to the Earth. The Current Health magazines will encourage literacy while providing various other ideas for the students to learn about and potentially implement in their own lives and in class.

Your help will give my students the resources they need to make better, healthier choices for the Earth, their own well being, and for those who love them.
