Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing. They are sweet, thoughtful, and eager to learn; each of them comes with a unique set of gifts and abilities that bring such a wonderful diversity to the classroom.

Our school has a great relationship with the neighborhood in which it sits and spends a lot of time getting students involved in the community and preparing them for college, leadership, and life.

Our school community has a high rate of Special Education students and English Language Learners, and the majority of our students come from low socio-economic backgrounds.

With such a high population of Spanish speaking students and students with classroom support needs, encouragement in literacy and mathematical foundations are very important.

My Project

Our students have been in person since the beginning of this school year and I have been so impressed by their perseverance and resilience. Due to my students' unique needs, it can be difficult to keep masks on, replace them when they are dirty and keep our hands and desk spaces clean. We are working very hard to help the students learn healthy habits, especially with the given COVID guidelines.

My students thrive in environments that are structured and regimented, and so having to adjust weekly to new regulations in and out of school has been difficult for them.

We have to change the way that we interact with one another, cleaning the classroom and our spaces constantly, and having to wear masks in class.

I have been providing sanitizer, sprays and wipes to my classroom since the beginning of the year so that the students will always have a clean and safe space to learn in. Although it has brought me joy to supply these items for our students, it can be a financial burden. Having these supplies will give the students a sense of ownership over their space and classroom and help to continue to build safe and healthy habits.
