"We only get one chance to prepare our students for a future that none of us can possible predict. What are we going to do with that one chance." Stephen R. Covey
I began my school counseling career 2 years ago with high ambitions and a can-do-mentality.
Up to this point I had spent most of my training dealing with high achieving high school students and what many of the teachers referred to as “helicopter parents.” Undoubtedly, starting my career in an inner city elementary school would take some adjustments. Nevertheless, my first year was a major success. From day one, it felt like home. Sure everything looked different from the outside, but in reality all the problems come down to the same things...relationships, motivation, and survival. My students come to us with such huge voids in their home lives. Our population is extremely transient and exceptionally poor. Consistency is frequently replaced with chaos, and even the most basic resources can seem like a luxury. Nevertheless, these kids make it to school each day and amaze me with their resiliency. Where they lack, they make up for in potential. And that is something we can work with.
I am planning to implement a school wide program. This begins with providing a solid foundation among those who have the greatest influence in the school…our teachers! During professional development training, the entire staff will participate in a detailed review of The Leader in Me. This book outlines the principle ideas behind the 7 habits used in Stephen R. Covey’s series and sets the groundwork for effectively changing the school, one child at a time. I have also requested a copy of The 7 Habits of Happy Kids for each primary classroom and a copy of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens for each of the intermediate classrooms. These books will give the teachers an opportunity to review the materials and expand on how they can incorporate it into their curriculum. These books will be a resource for the teacher throughout the year and available for the students to use within the classrooms.
By implementing this program, I am confident that we will be able to increase student character, school culture and decrease disciplinary issues, a sense of pride and engagement, greater parent satisfaction and involvement.
The materials will help us understand where we need to go and how we can get there. The concepts will be implemented in the school’s daily vocabulary and culture. The lessons we learn will be built into the student curriculum and practiced throughout the year.
