Healthy Food for the School and Community

Help me give my students the 4in x 4in x 8ft lumber for two new raised bed planters to add to our school garden, allowing more students to benefit from the science and practical applications.

My Students

My high school students take classes in the special education department of an urban school district in Worcester, MA. As much as is allowed due to standardized testing, we work on project-based learning and team up frequently with our life skills students to work on projects that will lead to betterment of the school or of the community.

My students are caring individuals who want to make positive changes to their school and the local community.

They spend their time working with younger students or students who are marginalized in the community. They work hard at their academics and plan for their futures, whether that is college, a training program, the military, or heading directly to work. Our building is old and not particularly designed for what we need it to do, but we make it work.

My Project

The supplies will help us double the size of our school's garden. We currently use it to teach some of our students about growing plants and the plant life cycle. Some of our students use the garden to grow food so they can bring fresh food home. Many of our students eat a lot of fast food and junk food, so this would tie in with the healthy eating we have been promoting in school. With the new raised beds, we would also be able to donate fresh food to the local food bank.

By donating to this project, you would help our urban students to learn about and benefit from local food production.

The joint venture between the resource room classes (mostly students with learning disabilities taking regular high school classes) and our students with intellectual disabilities or have autism spectrum disorder will share the new garden space. We will also be able to start a gardening club where students in school will partner with our students with disabilities, getting our students more involved in the wider school community. They will also have the opportunity to practice their socialization skills in a controlled environment outside the classroom. The raised beds are also designed to help our students with mobility issues still be able to use the garden, from wider edges to allow seating to the mulch flattening and softening the ground. One of my emphases this year and next year is community service, so the opportunity to give back to neighbors in need will connect the school with the local community and give them a sense of pride and accomplishment through the donation of fresh food.
