Healthy Choices

My students need 26 books related to Health and an apron visual aid to help them understand the digestive system.

This project is fully funded

I teach second grade at a Title 1 school. One third of the students in my class are second language learners and three students are classified special education students. Most of the families at my school are in the low economic category.

I teach a unit on making healthy choices, focusing on diet, exercise, dental hygiene, sleep, and mental health. I am able to provide my students with learning activities, but lack reading materials in my classroom library to supplement their learning. My students are eager to know more about this topic as it is one they can readily influence. Playing at recess or requesting fruits and vegetables at dinner are things they can do and feel empowered. I need to have more books on these subjects.

I have carefully chosen these titles which my students will be able to read independently. I am also asking for the visual aid (apron) which shows the digestive system because it will help my second language learners understand the content. I have a feeling that my special education students will benefit from the apron as well -- two of them do very well with things they can touch and manipulate.

Learning how to care for body and mind is something my students can actively do now, so it is a unit they become engaged in quickly. It is also knowledge they can take home and share with their families. Please help me inspire my students to begin making healthy choices now.
