Healthy Body, Happy Me

My students need 60 books related to health to participate in a reading mentoring program.

This project is fully funded

I believe in living healthy! I am a school nurse and helped initiate a Coordinated School Health program in our district. I am involved in health education at my school and want to get the students actively involved. I want to start a reading mentoring program where 4th grade students read to 1st grade students, fun books related to healthy living, eating well and being active. The students are low income; 96% qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Our students love to read, and love learning about their bodies and how to keep them healthy. Coming from low income families, the students are not often exposed to healthy eating habits and ways to be active. Most do not go to after-school gymnastic classes or join community soccer teams.

We need kid-friendly, fun books related to health, the body, and what to do to keep your body healthy, to start our "Healthy Body, Happy Me" reading mentoring program. This project will benefit both the 4th graders who do the reading and the 1st graders who learn from them. The 4th graders will be given guidance on reading techniques, and eliciting feedback from the 1st graders. Not only will their reading skills improve, but due to the subject matter, their health knowledge and hopefully their health habits will improve also. Little kids love learning from big kids, which should help improve the self-esteem of the 4th graders as they are given an important role as teachers.
