Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic and civically engaged fifth and sixth graders. Ethnically our school is about 55% Latino, 20% African-American, 10% Asian, and 5% White. About 50% of my students are English Language Learners of varying abilities, and the rest are native English speakers. They attend a Title I, inner-city school in a community-oriented neighborhood. My students and their families enjoy participating in school-sponsored events including craft night and our student-run multicultural fair.

My students desire to be challenged academically and to grow as critical thinkers.

In spite of the economic disparities and other difficulties my students face, I believe that they can all achieve greatness.

My Project

I constantly tell my 5th and 6th graders to, "stay hydrated" which can be a challenge to remember while wearing a mask. Due to Covid protocols our students currently only have access to water bottle fountains, and must carry a water bottle in order to stay hydrated during the school day. In addition to staying hydrated, my students deserve to have a neat classroom that meets their needs. Students also benefit from having a shared responsibility to make sure that their work areas are neat at the end of the day.

Having access to drinking water during the school day and the ability to maintain a safe, neat workspace are necessary for my students to feel comfortable and cared for in our classroom.

My students need reusable water bottles to stay properly hydrated, a vacuum and broom to keep our floors scrap free, and a first aid kit to take care of minor injuries. Having these tools available will make it easier to maintain a safe, healthy, clean, and hydrated classroom environment.
