This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help us in the fight against childhood obesity, asthma and childhood diabetes by donating to our playground equipment. Our students are among the nations highest incidence rate in childhood obesity, diabetes and asthma. With 8 times the nations highest rate for asthma our students need to play actively in order to combat the statistics. Currently in our school there are 100 “reported” cases of students suffering from asthma. We need your help to educate our students about the importance of active play. We have a large play yard but we do not have any equipment to play organized games during recess. Our play yard is just one big, empty, concrete yard with no playground equipment.

Students in our school come from very poor families who are trying to make ends meet.

Our school is a Title I school. This means that 99% of our school population lives below the poverty level and is entitled to a free lunch program. Although the students in our school are very poor and have limited resources they are always eager to learn and are very enthusiastic. Our school is located in a very poor section of New York City. Most of our students live in housing projects or shelters. Across from our school there is a highway which exacerbates the impact of asthma in our children. The resources available to the school are very limited and we are unable to buy equipment for our students to play.

My Project

With an empty play yard and a vivid imagination all our kids need is the equipment and materials to be able to play and grow. We are asking for your help to empower our students and give them the opportunity to be able to live a healthier and more active life. We need equipment, such as balls, hula hoops, cones and a cart to carry our gear. Your generosity will help our students play, run and be kids. Our goal is to decrease our rate of asthma or at least the reduce the recurrence of the number of asthma attacks. We have many staff members who assist with recess but we have no materials to engage the students in active play. Our hope is to educate our students about the benefits of exercise and leading a healthy life. This equipment will be used by at least 70 students during 8 recess periods. This means that with your donations you will be able to help 530 students take control of their health and their well being. This equipment would be rotating between recess periods, giving all the students in our school the opportunity to play with this equipment.

Research shows that Childhood obesity, asthma and Childhood diabetes can be decreased with an active lifestyle.

Unfortunately our students do not have the opportunity to play actively due to limited resources and space. With your help and support we can offer our students the opportunity to play and become healthier. All we have is an empty play yard and with your support we can provide them with the chance to run and play.
