Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Many of my students are part of a world language magnet and study a variety of languages. Many are also involved in music and clubs on campus, in addition to their rigorous academic program. The students organize nearly fifty student clubs as well! The school culture looks healthy, and the students seem happy. My classes have been discussing their ideas on ways to enhance instruction in the classroom. We've already begun setting up a band practice space for students to play during lunch and after school.

When students organize their own clubs and activities, they learn a lot about how the world works and how things get done. I like working with students who organize activities and events themselves. Sometimes when students describe disappointment after some performance or attempt doesn't completely fulfill their ambitious goals, I try to encourage them by pointing out how much they learn by organizing toward their own goals their own way. The keyboard of this project likewise is intended to encourage students to pursue their own interests. Many of my students are dealing with demanding academic schedules, but they still make time to pursue their personal interests. Even though the school year only began last week, students are helping to set up a band practice space in the classroom.

In Their Own Words

We're asking for a digital piano and speaker for our classroom. We have access to some keyboards on campus, but for those of us who are studying piano, we really need 88 weighted keys to practice properly. Guitar players always need picks, so we've included some of those as well in our project proposal.

Students in several classes discussed how best to improve our classroom, and this proposal of a digital piano to supplement our growing band practice setup won the most support for our first project. We can use the gear during lunch and after school to pursue our own musical interests. Deciding how to improve our classroom, creating this proposal, and writing our own songs all involve developing our own leadership.

Several of us have studied music for years, both in school and in private lessons, but few of us have written songs or made a band with our friends. We're already setting up a band practice space in our classroom, but adding the digital piano of this project will allow piano students to practice and play piano music better than we currently find available. Having an additional keyboard will also allow us to teach students how to begin playing.
