My Students

Please help me teach my middle school students to make healthy and nutritious food choices when they eat out...and, at the same time, hone their math skills.

I teach math to over 100 sixth graders at a K-8 center.

Our school is classified by the federal government as a 'high poverty' / 'Title I' school. It is in the restaurant district of a popular Florida resort. This project will help with two challenges that face our students. First, the need to make wise decisions about diet. Many of our children are overweight. They take little exercise and eat too much junk food. Second, they find advanced math pretty irrelevant to their daily needs.

My Project

One of the Donors Choose catalogs contains a book that teaches students how to use middle school math skills to select balanced meals from restaurant menus. This is just the kind of book that I want for my sixth grade math students. It will teach them about healthy food choices, and it will teach them math in a contextualized, interesting format. I want to get a class set of this book, Cecilia Minden's 'Restaurants by the Numbers', to use in my math lessons. I have done my homework on this book, and found that it received glowing reviews when it was published in 2008.

So please consider making a donation, no matter how small, to help the over 100 students whom I teach weekly in my math classes.

You will be 'killing two birds with one stone'. 'Restaurants by the Numbers' will teach my students about math AND about healthy eating - both very worthwhile aims.
