This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Towards the end of last year, Sam and a couple of her buddies approached me about starting a service club. After they told me their ideas about enriching the school community through action and awareness, I agreed to sponsor the club. Taking John F. Kennedy's famous inauguration speech as their inspiration, the Ask Not club was formed to serve the students and community of our high school.

The students in the Ask Not club are eager to not just help their fellow students but also completely change the culture of the school. Sam, Famh, Marwa, Brian, and the other twenty-something students are already planning actions and awareness campaigns for the coming school year.

Recognizing that 90% of our student body is eligible for free and reduced lunch and understanding that poverty is a real issue in and around the school community, the Ask Not club decided that their first project would be to assemble student necessity kits and distribute them through the school's wellness center (The Y-Team). As this project evolves, the Ask Not students will also be learning about how poverty and homelessness affect teenagers and what can be done to help.

This is a student-led project, created by students to serve students. The Ask Not students used their research skills to identify an issue within their community and school as the inspiration for this project. Learning that ours is a Title-1 school with 90% free and reduced lunch, the students recognized that many students may be going without the necessary and essential supplies needed to be clean and healthy. The students then worked together to identify the most essential products a person would need to feel clean and healthy. Ask Not students will be working together to assemble and package the life essentials kits. And finally, the students will also be working with our Wellness Center to coordinate distribution of the life essentials kits.

In Their Own Words

Our goal for this project is to make at least 50 kits filled with hygienic products such as deodorant and shampoo. With this project we're also hoping to raise awareness of homeless youth. In my community, homelessness is a reality that not everyone knows about, and it's a more common issue than many of us may imagine. Many homeless students choose to stay silent about their situation, and Ask Not wants to encourage them to ask for help because they do not need to do this on their own.

The majority of this project will be led by students. Through Donors Choose, Ask Not will acquire the personal care and hygiene products for our student life essentials kits. We are going to make the kits ourselves, and with help from our school’s Y Team, we will distribute the kits to students in our community.

This project is very important because many students go throughout their day without many necessities. Data collected by the National Center for Homeless Education shows that there are 1.3 million homeless students in the United States. When a student’s basic needs aren't met, they may not perform as highly as their peers. Here at Kennedy, we want to ensure that our fellow students are at their full potential by providing them with what they need in order to succeed. We are focusing on hygiene because taking care of yourself is very important. Good personal hygiene has been proven to have physical and mental benefits.
