Hello, I am a Special Education Teacher in Alaska at a school which provides services students that are considered to be severely at risk youth. This population has a high need for positive experiences that can build their confidence and skill set. Many of the students live in group homes and lack opportunities to participate in local or after school activities. In addition, this is a population of students that struggle with mental health and depressive symptoms. In order to help the students manage their depression, an Outdoor Adventure class has been offered as an elective.
This Outdoor Adventure Class is focused on building the confidence and individual skills of at risk youth.
We do this by engaging them in outdoor activities, where the students are able to relax and build their self esteem

My Project
Alaska Outdoor Recreation: this course will include a variety of outdoor activities with a focus on safety, fun and learning. The materials requested will give the students some equipment to help develop their skills as well as, give them different ways to access the bike trails.
The short term goal of the program is to introduce at risk teens to the local bike trails and other outdoor community venues.
The long term goal is to instill a lifelong desire to participate in outdoor recreation.
The course will cover: outdoor safety, procedures, expectations, terminology, and proper preparation for outside activities. The students will experience team building activities and walking/riding for wellness.
