Health and Personal Hygiene Materials

My Students

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. One of the first impressions we make is with our personal hygiene. This is a lesson taught to us in Health class but rarely reinforced with basic hygienic materials. Let's provide them to kids. What a concept!

I work in a high poverty school.

70% of the students in our school are on Free and Reduced lunch. Our school has qualified for Breakfast After the Bell, which is a program where every one of our 800+ students is offered free breakfast. We also are part of the Fresh Fruits and Veggies program where we get shipments of fresh fruits and vegetables to give to our students at least once a week. My students are grateful for these programs and they use them daily to keep their bellies full while they go through the rigors of a long school day.

My Project

One of the subjects I'm required to teach is Health. As a profession we lack a lot of resources to adequately model healthy living. I'd use these materials in my class to have the students get their own tooth brush and floss so they can brush and floss after every meal and snack with the Dr. Firefly 1 minute timer tooth brushes and the DenTech kid's floss that I am requesting. They'd use the Purel hand sanitizer that I'm requesting to make sure to keep clean as they eat their food. The fresh fruits and veggies will no longer go on a paper towel, but instead in a clean bowl every day with the bowls that I am requesting. I have also requested personal packs of tissues for the students so they can blow their nose without having to get up and disrupt instruction. My goal is not to just teach about Health, but to also make sure the students are participating in healthy living.

This project is going to make a difference because my students are going to not only learn about healthy living but they are going to experience healthy living as well.

Some of these kids can't afford to have the personal hand sanitizer, floss, and tissues. We can use these items to not only talk about healthy living, but also demonstrate it. This allows them to attend to their basic needs without letting it cloud their head as they try to navigate the rigors of 4th grade.
