Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Childhood obesity is an epidemic, especially in low income communities like the one in which my school is located. We want to encourage classroom healthful living and regular exercise from an early age.

My school is a title 1 school with 100% eligibility, meaning that ALL students fall below the minimum income level.

My kids face many obstacles every day, including poverty, early pregnancy, and gang violence. These obstacles could easily distract any child from succeeding. My students, however, are VERY committed to success! While it is important to do well academically, it is also important to live a healthy, well balanced life. Good health will contribute to academic success. We recently had a teacher complete his 7th New York City marathon. This inspired my students to believe that they too could complete a marathon as a class. We now have the goal for each student to complete a marathon each semester. Students will have to keep track of the distance they walk, run, or climb each day. Each will make a poster that tracks their progress that they will update weekly.

My Project

In order to help my students reach their goal of each student completing a marathon per semester, I would like to supply them with the necessary materials to complete the project. My students LOVE baseball. While many of them have their own baseball mitts, several do not. I would like to have a mitt in the class so that students who cannot afford to buy their own mitt can also play. I would also like chart paper so that they can advertise their progress. This would act as friendly competition so that student can compete for who has walked/run the most. It will also allow us to see who needs more encouragement to be more active. We would also like a flip camcorder so that we may document this process and measuring tools so that we can measure our strides and more accurately measure our distances walked each day.

Health and fitness is essential to a long and happy life.

I look forward to be able to work on a project with my students that will help instill that regular physical activity is an essential and important part of life. Thank you in advance for helping us to complete this project and to become healthier!
