This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My classroom, located on the South Side of Chicago, is home to some of Chicago's most at-risk youth. Experiencing traumas such as poverty, violence, homelessness, and community disinvestment, my students require intensive social-emotional support. Over the past six years, I've centered my classroom around personal healing and growth; offering students the opportunity to reflect on their lives and build upon their strengths through music making.

Through this project, I hope to provide students with the healing experience of group drum circles.

Research has shown that group drumming can accelerate physical healing, boost the immune system, and have calming and focusing effects (Schwarc, 2018). It has also been shown to provide improvement in social skills, emotional expression, and cognition for students (Moore 2011).

Student Demographics:

Low Income: 96%

Students with IEPs (diverse learners): 33%

Homeless (w/o permanent or adequate homes): 27%

English Language Learners (including a large population of recent asylum-seeking migrants): 35%
