Healing Trauma at School with EMDR

I need EMDR training and the corresponding textbook to help my students learn the source of their maladaptive behaviors in relation to trauma and find new coping skills.

My Students

When you live in a coastal area, hurricanes are always a possibility. Knowing a hurricane is possible and experiencing the trauma of a hurricane are two different animals. I am a student support counselor in a high school that was directly impacted by hurricane Harvey. While I was not here for the storm, I can attest that the effects from this traumatic event are still here. On top of the trauma students experienced from the storm, I am constantly learning about the normal stressors of high school.

Students are expected to perform academically even if their world was turned upside down from previous storms.

Some of my students are overwhelmed by their life stressors (homelessness, sickness from the storms, displaced family, academic pressures, and more) but do not have the time or tools to manage these feelings. As an educator, it is my job to make sure they are successful academically but sometimes we need to take care of their emotional health first.

My students are wonderful, passionate people. They just need help sometimes learning how to cope with traumatic situations while attending school and moving forward.

My Project

EMDR Therapy can be used with children and adolescents of all ages and is one of the most research based protocols for helping one heal from trauma.

When children are traumatized, have upsetting experiences, or repeated failures, they lose a sense of control over their lives.

This can result in symptoms of anxiety, depression, irritability, anger, guilt, and/or behavioral problems. Events such as accidents, abuse, violence, death, and natural disasters are traumatic, but we do not always recognize the ways they effect and influence a child’s everyday life.

As a school counselor, I often see students who have experienced multiple traumas and need someone to help guide them through a journey of healing so they can return to pre-incident functionability. This training will help me accomplish just that.

After this training I will be able to do focused work with individual students and groups of students so they can get back to focusing on their education and what comes after high school rather than being stuck in their trauma.
