My Students

I have the pleasure of working with the most vulnerable, underserved students in the community. The students I serve range from the age of 3 to 10 years old. My students have experienced a range of traumas, some from the time they were born; born into poverty, violence filled neighborhoods and a country where their lives are not valued. In our community mental health services are limited and hard to acquire. In the world of living with Covid and being in a pandemic, these children are suffering even more.

There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful than anything that bleeds.

In my office, I am creating a safe space where students can release and explore their feelings. I am trying to create a space where students are able to be free in expressing their emotions while building self-care, self-coping mechanisms. In order to do so, we need appropriate resources.

My Project

Healing is a delicate process. The students we serve are in the most vulnerable population; this population does not always receive quality care. It is my goal to ensure that all students I encounter receive quality care. The items I have chosen are items that I know will make this a possibility.

You cannot learn if you are not mentally available to receive information.

My students struggle with emotional regulation. The items I chose are specific to teaching about emotions and how to regulate them. The students enjoy drawing and being creative. I have chosen items that will allow them to express their creativity. The pandemic has put huge stressors on families and children.

Play is a child's language. Recently, I have been trained in Sand Tray therapy; the storage boxes will allows for proper storage of the pieces utilized for sand tray therapy. Students are more comfortable with expressing themselves through play and activities that are not mentally draining. The play items will help students with communicating things they cannot say verbally.
