Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
NYC is the melting pot of all cultures and in my art classroom this is more evident than ever. The majority of my students do not speak English, and many only are just beginning to learn. With so many newcomers who do not know the language I find my students to feel overwhelmed and in need of mental support with the changes.
Posters in Spanish reflecting positive affirmations, putty to relax tense hands, and visual centered games will help build classroom unity and confidence within my new students.
I also spend so much time stumbling with trying to translate papers, run to my computer to use google to answer questions, and ask my students to use their own devices to translate for basic conversation, that can be very overwhelming for my students to see. I am hoping that with this pocket translator I will be able to talk and provide instant language support in my class. I do not speak any other language other than English, but have been slowly trying to learn basic Spanish in order to meet my students at a starting point, but this is not working. My students speak many different dialect forms of Spanish and Arabic and I feel many are unable to enjoy art making and learn because of the block in language.
