Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), I provide speech-language services, interventions, professional development, and parent training for nine Head Start Centers and two Community Partner Centers.
My students are predominantly low-income students of color.
Nearly all of my students live below the poverty line. They and their families have been through tremendous hardship during the COVID-19 pandemic. The stress and trauma of surviving the pandemic, food insecurity, housing insecurity and the socio-political climate of the last two years have put a strain on everyone. My preschool-age students have absorbed the stress of the adults around them and are struggling with self-regulation and attention.
My Project
Breathe For Change's 300-hour yoga teacher training will teach me advanced tools to promote wellness in my students, staff, and the community at large.
After completing the training, I plan to teach yoga, mindful practices, and breathwork to my students which will assist them with managing transitions, improving attention, and improving their ability to self-regulate.
Healing trauma through movement and mindfulness will improve my students’ ability to get their minds and bodies in a “ready state” for learning. In addition, I will teach after-school yoga to help teachers de-stress and provide training for caregivers to learn the benefits of mindful practices for themselves and their children.
Studies have shown, students who participate in a school curriculum that focuses on emotional intelligence have lower delinquency rates, fewer arrests, and have lower needs for health and mental health services later in life. Therefore, social-emotional wellness is an equity issue. In addition, research shows that teacher burnout negatively affects student performance. Assisting teachers to manage their own stress, will improve student outcomes in the long run.
