Healing in a Comfortable Classroom Community

My Students

I teach a wonderful group of 14 high school-age students at a small non-traditional school. Our school is a separate campus from the primary high school and is trauma-informed.

Our classroom is a caring community where we engage in project-based learning and work in the local community twice per week.

Work in the community is at a local outdoor education center, and here students care for rescued animals and assist with the maintenance and development of the farm. A few times a month, we engage in outdoor adventure training to assist in the building of trusting relationships among our students and staff.

My Project

Project-based learning is the format for our students, and these projects are connected to their interests and passions and effectively engage reluctant learners. However, our classroom environment with standard chairs and attached desks is not conducive to building a trusting, comfortable learning community.

By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention, focus and engagement, but you will also ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.

When students feel safe and comfortable in a learning environment, their academic success increases. Our project-based learning format has students researching topics and developing presentations.

We all work best when we are comfortable and engaged in meaningful work. These chairs and separate desk stands would make for a wonderful addition to our classroom!
