This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with students who are English language learners and have learning disabilities. They also come from families who struggle with paying bills and affording school supplies and books. Despite these challenges, my students bring many strengths to the classroom, including a passion for learning and a willingness to take risks as they acquire the building blocks of reading.
My students love math, science, computers, and art, and they love learning how things work.
They are curious about the world and are eager to improve their literacy skills.
My Project
These ukuleles, tambourines, and egg shakers will give my sixth graders the instruments they need to create healing jams and beats when we meet outside for in-person "Outdoor School" in the afternoons. We will strum basic chords to play simple songs like Row, Row, Row Your Boat and This Land is Your Land. Students will be encouraged to strum and experiment on their own and discover their own songs. We will create spontaneous jams with the egg shakers and tambourines. Playing music together outside will be healing and fun.
My students have been learning at home on their Chromebooks for more than a year and are eager for hands-on learning experiences where they can express themselves and connect with each other in a positive way.
At the end of the school year, each in-person learning student will get to take home their ukulele to continue playing at home for their families and friends. The healing power of music will give these students hope and a positive way to express themselves. Playing music together will be a memorable and healing experience.
