Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students that attend The PACE Center are students that are at risk of dropping out and are struggling to be successful within the traditional school setting.
Our students are struggling to make better choices in life and oftentimes are in a place where the only place to go is up.
Most kids have been exposed to some type of trauma that has now changed their approach to life.
Our campus serves two functions for the district. The first is an alternative placement for students who breach the code of conduct at their home campus. Often times students are caught abusing drugs or are having difficulty with managing their behavior. They will come to us for an alternative placement as a consequence. We also serve as a holding ground for students that are on their way to Juvenal Detention. It is common for our students to be faced with legal issues.
The second function for our campus is considered the school of choice. Students apply, interview, and attend an orientation with their parents in order to attend our campus. These students have come to the realization that they need more support than the traditional campus.
My Project
I would like to be trained in a counseling modality called EMDR. This counseling technique can aid in ending symptoms of PTSD, such as a nervous stomach, nightmares, negative self-talk, and recurring self-defeating patterns of behavior that result in conflicts. It also shows positive results with:
Sexual and/or physical abuse
Complicated grief
Disturbing memories
Panic attacks
Phobias
Dissociative disorders
Body dysmorphia and eating disorders
As a student support counselor, I will be able to provide support at my campus and district level. I will use information learned to provide one-to-one meetings with students, small groups, as well as informational presentations to support both students, parents, and staff.
