My students need headsets so we can listen to and create our own podcasts.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Learning a language takes years of practice, trial, and error. My students need to practice all facets of language, especially listening and speaking. In a room of 25, it is difficult for all voices to be heard. That is why in my classes we use podcasting to refine these skills.
My high school students are all recent immigrants to the United States.
As a group, although they come from dozens of countries and speak over a dozen languages, they all have a common mission: to learn English while completing the same high school requirements as native English speakers. To overcome this daunting task, we use a collaborative, project-based, interdisciplinary, and content-rich environment in all classes. All teachers are both content and English teachers. In my science class, I use a hands-on activities approach to encourage the use of English in all of its forms - reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
For listening activities, it is essential that students be given multiple opportunities to hear content. Repetition is a excellent way to "tune" the ear for understanding the sounds of a new language. In the same way, students need repetition speaking so that they get used to saying these new sounds, as well.
My Project
One of the most effective tools for developing these skills is podcasts. They afford students the opportunity to simply hit rewind and play to hear something again. There is lots of great science content in podcast form, offering a treasure-trove of resources.
We have even found excellent online resources for creating our own podcasts and PowerPoint-like, student-narrated presentations. If a student does not like the quality of their recording, they can simply hit delete and start over again. When we have used these tools, even students who are reluctant to practice with their peers have spent hours perfecting their presentations and listening to those of other students.
With a dedicated class set of headsets to compliment the various ipods, computers, and other devices available to us, we would be able to listen and record without worrying whose turn it is. Because they have removable earcups, these headsets could be inexpensively cleaned and used by future classes.
Language is an extremely intimate thing.
Without it, we lack means of expressing who we are or how we feel. Teenagers are in a period of their lives where their emotions and fears are in overdrive. Not having language to release those fears, in fact, having a lack of language as an added fear can be debilitating. These headsets will provide a much-needed outlet for my students to practice and to find their voice in their new home, America.
