This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom is loud, energetic, and fast-paced. I teach four band courses and two piano/music theory courses. My students work extremely hard to come together and develop their musical skills, both as soloists and as part of an ensemble.

My school is situated in the middle of a struggling community.

Our population is largely Hispanic, and many of our students are English Language Learners. The students at my school view many of our school organizations as a second family and support system.

My Project

Our Drumline performs for the school and the community very often throughout the school year, so our percussion equipment needs to be repaired regularly to keep them in good working condition. We have not been able to replace our bass drum heads in a few years because of the cost, but now the sound is beginning to suffer.

We use different sized bass drums so that they can be tuned to different pitches.

This helps the students create and perform more interesting and complicated percussion cadences. In our current situation, the drum heads are several different brands and styles, which causes them to sound out of tune. By replacing the heads, we will be able to improve our sound.
