My students are multi-faceted, multi-talented, AND multi-personality 5th-grade Rockstars! They’re brilliant scientists, revolutionary entrepreneurs, ficklish activists, pun-loving dabbers, extreme floss dancers, Rubik's cube masters, not the best picture takers, and downright hilarious. Seriously, they have the best sense of humor! Just ask them what you call an alligator in a vest and they’ll answer “investigator” and shoot back a cheesy one-liner in the same breath.
My students are creative masterminds who dabble haphazardly in social-etiquette and public-relations.
They forgive each other easily and become besties overnight. However, their morals run a tight ship and they won’t tolerate misconduct from one another. Rule breakers get them particularly riled up. And in the middle of their battle-cry of injustices, they'll offer you a sticky Cheetos... that they aren’t supposed to have; because well, my students are givers.
Perhaps because of this combination of personality and hilarity, my students are above all else, my inspiration. They inspire me to be innovative and creative but never forget to implement fun. My students are the BEST teachers. They've taught me the added benefit of embracing humor in the classroom. They’re my kids and I adore every single quirky characteristic of these spectacular little humans.
My Project
One of the biggest challenges I have met is obtaining technology for our classroom. Through several very generous donors, I have acquired six Chromebooks that stay in my classroom and we now have access to a traveling computer cart for 30 minutes/day. The technology in the classroom has made a huge difference in what I am able to incorporate in my lessons. However, one issue I keep having is the inability for my students to use their Chromebooks to access resources that require audio without disrupting others’ learning. By adding headphones, my students will have the ability to utilize the learning opportunities at any time within the classroom.
Children love a challenge: especially when the challenge stretches their imaginations and compels them to seek answers in fun and innovative scenarios.
By investing in a classroom set of headphones, my students will be given an even greater opportunity to become ingenious entrepreneurs and skillful masterminds. As a science and writing teacher, I am constantly searching for innovative gateways of resources and educational platforms to indulge the various learning styles within my class. The headphones will enable my students to have uninhibited access to WebQuests, videos, tutorials, apps, and Google Classroom. Our district adopted an excellent online supplemental science curriculum, and I have created my own youtube tutorials for Sign Language practice. I run an after-school STEAM Club program that would utilize the headphones as well.
In addition to expanding student access on the Chromebooks, the headphones would bring significant value to students who are easily distracted and need them to help buffer noise. This will help them focus on their project instead of being distracted by another's audio. The headphones would enhance Chromebook usability significantly. The headphones are non-consumable, excellent quality, and will enrich my students' education over several years.
