This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach first grade in a low-income school district. About half of my students are ESL students. They predominantly speak Spanish, but I also have some who speak Arabic. I have had a few in the past who speak one of the Asian languages as well. It varies year to year.
Since my students are limited English speakers, they do not have much support at home.
Usually, their parents have just come here from different countries and they themselves do not know our language very well. Therefore, they are unable to give their child any support when it comes to their education.
Being an ESL student myself when I was their age, I can understand their struggle. But they continue to persevere every day and I couldn't be prouder of how many gains they make by the end of the year!
My Project
The headphones will help my students do programs on our Chromebooks that support our reading and math curriculum without being disrupted by the other students working. The headphones help to cancel out other noises.
We have specific programs on our Chromebooks that help reinforce reading and phonic strategies already taught in class.
They also teach some new skills to help with their reading fluency and comprehension.
We also have math programs that let them practice math skills through fun battles they can have with other students in our class. This makes it very motivating for our students to want to figure out the math problems.
