Help me give my students the ability to hear while using their computers. All of my students have needs that require the use of assistive technology on a daily basis. Being able to hear clearly is important.
My students are bright, active, funny, and most of all in love with technology! The students love to use i-Pads and laptops to play educational games, and they love doing research projects for science and social studies.
We use computers and/or tablets every day to access programs like Acheive3000, Mobymax, and Lexia Reading Program with only one pair of headphones.
My students also use the computers as assistive technology aides. Being a Title I school, all of our students receive free and reduced-price lunch. Many, if not the majority of students in my class do not have the ability to buy their own headphones. As their teacher, I feel it is my responsibility to provide for my students. The students are missing out on valuable instructional time using computer-based programs due to a lack of headphones.
My Project
Assistive technology is a wonderful way to open up a world of possibilities for students with disabilities. In my classroom we use a lot of assistive technology, from listening to books online to producing essays with speak to text software. The students are thriving being able to use this technology, but it is hard to focus on an essay when you can hear your neighbors book being read aloud because there are not any headphones from them to use.
It is a daily struggle to find places in the room for students to go and listen to their books so they are not bothering someone else.
That is why this project is so important to me. I want to give my kstudents the ability to listen to books anytime, anywhere they feel comfortable, while at the same time other students can work on their writing using the text to speak software.
Headphones are as important in the classroom as are pencils. As teachers we use both every day to engage our students in the lessons we teach. We also use them to take state assessments, district assessments, and classroom assessments. As you can see headphones are more than a way to listen to music, they open a world of limitless possibilities.
