My pre-kindergarten to fifth grade students live in high poverty and are almost entirely Hispanic. Our school is 100% Title I. Seventy percent of the students are English Language Learners with Spanish spoken at home who eventually transition to English by third or fourth grade.
Most of our youngest students need to learn to love reading first in Spanish and then in English.
Regrettably, most homes do not have a library or computer for our scholars. The students are always most grateful that donors have them in mind.
My Project
Most of our low-income students come from homes where there is no computer or headphone available to them. There are a limited number of computers/headphones for reading or testing in our school. Since our students are mostly Hispanic and English Language Learners, they very much need to hear English to increase their comprehension.
Headphones for our laptop computers are an essential element for our scholars to have a full-fledged and rewarding reading experience.
We have access to a large selection of age-appropriate ebooks in fiction and non-fiction that offer highly engaging story lines, graphics, and sound effects to the scholars.
