This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My first graders are all eager and energetic learners. They come to school excited to learn every day. They love to learn through games, read aloud stories, buddy reading, partner activities, and even independent activities. They really enjoy learning and having fun simultaneously.
I am so lucky to have a wonderful group of first graders who are eager to learn to read and write.
Our school is a diverse school in an urban setting. About 60% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Many students come from varying backgrounds, economic situations and many students do not speak English as their first language. Despite these challenges, my students work hard everyday and make me very proud.
My Project
My first graders are in need of working headphones to use during our math, reading and phonics centers. We are very lucky to have iPads to use during centers, but without working headphones it can become very noisy.
This project will make a difference in the school day for all of my first graders as they will have a quiet place to work during centers.
Our current set of headphones no longer works. Students use very educational and engaging apps such as Dreambox and raz-kids to help improve their skills during centers. The problem is that the noise from the iPad games can be very distracting to little learners.
During centers when some students are on the iPads, I am working with a group of students and other students are working on a separate activity quietly. Each game on the iPad is individualized to each student's level in reading or math. This means that all of the children are on different levels and different books. The sounds compete for their attention and can be distracting. We would really appreciate your help!
