My Students

Our fifth grade class is a dynamic environment that fosters inquiry based learning. We believe that all kids should have equal opportunities to explore and create rich academic experiences. In order to make this a really, all students need to have access to the world of technology throughout each school day.

We have a group of 30 fifth grade students in my public school classroom in the heart of Brooklyn.

Our classroom is filled with various cultures and life experiences due to students with families from around the world. In turn empathy and understanding are naturally embedded in our classroom communities. Students are the center of our classroom communities. We encourage them to guide their own learning and become thinkers that question the world around them.

My Project

Recently we were incredibly fortunate to have 30 Chromebooks donated to our fifth grade class community. Currently we are immersed in our social commentary unit where we listen, read, and watch current events. For example, today, the kids are listening to and reading an NPR article regarding the NFl decision on the National Anthem. After reading and listening to the piece, the kids will share their personal opinions about the piece and the issue. They will also share whether they believe the piece to be written from a bias or neutral perspective. This work will then guide their own writing as they create their own commentary pieces.

Having a class set of headphones, will grant all kids the opportunity to listen to current events/lessons without hearing echoed versions of the same audio simultaneously-- clearly breakdown their focused engagement.

We would be more than delighted to enrich our class learning space with headphones for each child!
