Headphones for Focused Learning

My Students

I teach at a school where over 80% of our students come from low-income families and receive free or reduced-price lunches. Approximately 45% are African American, 45% are Hispanic, and 20% are English language learners. They come from very diverse households. Many live with aunts/uncles, grandparents or have a single parent who works two jobs.

Our students want to learn and do well, even when the statistics are not in their favor.

We, as a school, want to provide an environment where our students want to come and learn with us.

My Project

We have individual Chromebooks for us to use in the classroom. Our students have to learn to be able to work complex math problems online because their state standardized test is all online. I try to provide my students with differentiated learning activities digitally so they can practice their skills in different ways and have different ways to show me what they have learned.

It is important for some students to be able to listen to their math problems read to them because some of their reading skills are not at grade level.

I also have students with special needs that it is required that I provide them with oral administration on their tests and daily math work, so having headphones will allow me to easily provide what is required. My students like to do Edpuzzle videos which require students to watch and listen to videos while they answer problems as it goes along. Many of our students are not able to provide their own headphones and these additional pairs I have requested will help to ensure everyone has their own to use during class and that we do not have to wait and share.
