Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first-grade classroom is a place full of challenge, discovery, and life long learning. 99% of the students in our school qualify to receive free or reduced price lunch and 100% of all students eat breakfast and a healthy snack provided daily. My students come to school ready to learn! They are eager learners and full of life. My students are between the ages of 5 and 7. They love to work together and explore new things. It is so important for me to continue to instill a love for learning despite any obstacles they face living in an inner-city.

My Project

Our school was recently the recipient of an Apple Grant. Every child in our school was awarded their own Apple iPad to use at school. It sure is an exciting time. We were issued a set of earbuds for each student but they are not appropriate for first-grade students. The generic earbuds are not safe, unhygienic, and do not fit these youngsters. My students would benefit from a good quality set of headphones so they can use their iPads on a daily basis.

For most of my students, the only exposure they get with technology is the exposure I give them at school.

Using iPads will help differentiate activities in all academic areas. There are hundreds of applications that the students can use to help with sight word identification and phonemic awareness. Students can listen to books read aloud to them or practice math facts using the flash card app! The joy that this technology brings into our classroom is unimaginable. I am looking forward to seeing my first graders faces when they get to use their iPads for the first time this year.
