My Project
Headphones are crucial to the access to general education content for special education students. Students who are in special education services in our classroom are all more than two grade levels behind. With that being said, students who are unable to use headphones lack access to the general education curriculum when it is not read aloud to them. This results in inadequate access to grade-level materials.
The goal of the use of headphones is to allow students who are significantly below reading levels access to grade-level texts to continue their development of age-appropriate background knowledge, vocabulary, language structure, verbal reasoning, and literacy knowledge.
Although students are behind in their decoding skills it is crucial for their development to continue practicing comprehension skills to understand a variety of words, meanings, and syntax when used in their day-to-day lives. As students begin to improve their decoding skills they are closer to closing the gaps in their English Language Arts Skills.
