Overall the book Refuge will be used to explore themes of family, emotions, moving frequently and adapting to new cultures. Many teaching strategies will be used with exposing students to the historical information that is presented within the novel. GLAD strategies will be used to ensure the students are receiving comprehensible input (timelines, pictorial input charts, etc.). In addition, vocabulary will be highlighted from within the novel that is useful for English Language Learners. Vocabulary will be introduced with the use of different strategies depending on the tiered level of the word. Along with vocabulary study, realia will be purchased for the students to enhance their experiences with learning new vocabulary words. These novels will assist the students in being able to draw connections for their writing assignments. Oftentimes students struggle with being able to relate and therefore write about their connections with materials when they are not culturally relevant. With these new books, students in my classroom will be able to learn about other adolescents' stories that could be similar to theirs or someone within their immediate family, therefore creating an atmosphere that allows students to engage, connect and express their realities through the English Language Arts curriculum. They will be able to be exposed to grade level content that relates to their distinct experiences from other students in the school. The student's will also discover a passion for reading which many students struggle to do at an early age because of classroom materials that are not culturally relevant to the students. Upon receiving the novels, the students will be enlightened to be reading from brand new books and exploring their own identities at an early age.
