This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school serves approximately 570 students who travel from the Bronx or are from the East Harlem neighborhood. 89% of the student population is of a Hispanic or Latinx background, 9% Black, and 1% white. With an overwhelming number of impoverished families, we are designated as a Title 1 funded school and due to the chronic absenteeism of its black subgroup, it is also a Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) school. Of the approximate 570 students enrolled, 34% has been identified as English Language Learners and 19% special education. We share the complex with a talented and gifted K-8 school and participate in a District 75 Special Education Inclusive Services program.
They love sports, video games, anime, and the performing arts to name a few of their interests.
Many of them are proud of where they come from and like to express themselves in any way possible. With remote learning, my students have struggled to maintain consistent attendance and motivation. They are struggling to persevere academically and personally due to this pandemic.
My Project
Our students struggle to participate in class and let their voices be heard. Some of my students have expressed their inability to hear what is being said in the class because of distractors in the home. These headphones would not only serve as an incentive, but increase student participation and performance. Recently, I started using Nearpod as one of the online applications to engage students. There are awesome features that help students record themselves and their responses to in-class tasks. Our English language learners and students with special education needs would be able to practice and develop their speaking and listening skills.
