Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our 2nd graders are the best! They are enthusiastic, energetic, and ready to learn! As a whole, our students are a very diverse group. We are a Title 1 school.
Over 98% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, and several get a backpack of food for the weekend from the local food pantry.
Many of our families struggle to get their children basic supplies for school. We feel like it is our responsibility to give "our kids" the best learning experience possible. We are constantly trying to find creative ways to organize our classroom and find supplies. We truly appreciate any help with this endeavor!
My Project
New K-2 standards require students to complete iStation standardized testing 3 times a year using computers or iPads. Students also complete iStation Math and Literacy intervention practice via their devices every day. These interactive lessons digitally present content with engaging voices and animation. The explicit and direct instruction provided by the program is adaptive to student needs, and connects students with lessons and activities to help increase understanding and engagement.
Learning and testing requires a great deal of focus and concentration.
In order to complete their computerized testing and interventions accurately, students must have high quality headphones that do not distort speech sounds. The headphones will benefit all the students in the classroom but they are especially essential for our students with learning disabilities and those who are English language learners (ELLs), (approximately 65% of our classroom population). Additionally, testing is stressful enough without students having to constantly fiddle with headphones that are ill-fitting.
With this in mind, my co-teacher and I are always seeking ways to help are students be more successful. The funds for this project will allow TWO second grade classrooms to purchase classroom sets of high quality over-the-ear headphones to enhance learning and focus during classroom activities, ultimately leading to higher achievement.
