My Students

This year is my third year at the middle school level! I am teaching reading and writing to 150 sixth graders throughout several periods of the day. Students come from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic contexts. At our school, over 26.6% of our students are Hispanic: over 10% speak limited English, and at least 35.8% are considered low income. Many students come from homes where they've not been read to, or have had libraries of their own.

The heart of my classroom is that all students have access to quality, rich, and rigorous literature.

Not only is there opportunity to develop reading skills and strategies, but also, to participate in facilitated class and small group discussions which help students connect literature themes to their own lives. Students study mentor texts that model the kind of narrative, explanatory and informational writing, that is expected of a sixth grade student.

Teacher-student individualized reading and writing conferences take place on a daily basis.

My Project

Students will use these books to read in the classroom, and at home, to practice reading skills and strategies that we've practiced with a novel that we've read together. When students left the classroom to work remotely, one year ago, some books from my classroom library were checked out. I haven't received these books back into my library, and would like to replace them for my new students! Students are excited to be in the classroom, and excited to be checking out books! So many of them have not had access to books this past year. My ELL students, and my students that read below the sixth grade level, will be helped by listening to audiobooks, with headphones, in the classroom, as they follow along in their books!
