My Students
This year, I am teaching over 100 students from a variety of backgrounds and need to help these students with their tech needs. Our students come to Brashear from all over Pittsburgh and around the world. Most are economically disadvantaged students.
I work at the largest urban high school in Pittsburgh, PA.
Our students encompass a wide range of individuals who come from a variety of backgrounds. We also have students who are refugees from war-torn areas like the Sudan, the Congo, Guatemala, Honduras, Syria, and Afghanistan. Our student population speaks over 38 different languages. Some of them have never had the opportunity for formal schooling until they came to the U.S.
My Project
Last year we were very lucky to get a grant for headphones with microphones, which my students need to practice their speaking and listening in English, and also they need to use for standardized testing. These are necessary especially due to the pandemic, where most students were learning from home almost all year. Only two of my students had access to headphones and all of my students have siblings and other relatives participating in virtual learning, in the same room, all day long. It was very hard for my students to hear me and for me to hear them. It was also nearly impossible for my students to focus on their classes.
We waited, from November until June, for the headphones to arrive.
The grant was received in November. The headphones finally arrived in June, a couple of days before the school year ended. When we opened the boxes we were so excited but then realized, whoops, we couldn't use them because we need a splitter for each set! Last week we learned that our students may continue as hybrid or virtual learners for part of our upcoming school year due to a bus driver shortage so these splitters are just as important now as they were last year.
Please help us use these new headphones by donating to our splitter project. It is very hard to find splitters due to the pandemic and there are currently three different sellers on two different websites through which we can order enough. The cost is anywhere from $2.99 to $8.09 for each splitter. Every little bit helps.
