I teach in Southeastern Kentucky where children face a number of obstacles on a daily basis. Many of our students come from single parent homes, non-traditional family units, or other economically challenged circumstances.
Many of our students are given a backpack of food for each weekend or break to ensure they have food to eat outside of the school premises.
One hundred percent of the students at our school receive free breakfast and lunch. However, being faced with these type economic barriers does not reflect their eagerness to learn. My students are hard workers and are willing to do what it takes to be successful.
My students depend on me and my school family to help meet their needs. My number one goal is to keep them safe and prepare them for the future. To keep students motivated and interested in school, I must introduce fun and new activities weekly. I found that they do best with hands-on activities and new technology.
My Project
Our district subscribes to two researched based online programs for students. These programs allow students to receive immediate feedback and also engages them into game based learning. Our school only has one computer lab with a limited number of computers. We serve 300+ students and are in need of additional technology.
Receiving Chromebooks would ensure that my students will have the opportunity to practice math and literacy skills everyday.
Daily access is vital to their success. It also would help to motivate students by keeping their learning interesting, relevant and enjoyable. Kids love technology and they truly enjoy this method of learning.
