This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is full of energy -- our students crave education although many entered high school without the solid foundation necessary to achieve success. With the help of inspirational activities, our students have the opportunity to fully understand multiple aspects of society.
Our students enter high school far below level in terms of their academics.
However, they choose our relatively small school due to the fact that they want to attend college and want to avoid many of the obstacles that they would face in larger NYC schools. Our students want the personalized attention which they know will allow them to thrive academically. Last year we had a 90% graduation rate which is a testament to our success and the motivation of our students.
My Project
Our students will be able to learn about the inspirational story of a young woman who was willing to risk her life to fight against gender discrimination. Students will then take this story to the next level by choosing their own cause and trying to advocate for change.
While many of our students have struggled academically, none of faced the struggles of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai, who was targeted by the Taliban and severely wounded due to her quest for education.
She will show them how important education is, and how a motivated youth can use leadership to achieve change.
