Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of my students have never been outside their city limits. Taking them to see the screening of "He Named Me Malala" will help open the eyes of students who do not realize that the world is full of kids that, like them, struggle with injustice and poverty and yet choose to rise above their limits
My students live in a low-income, urban community and rarely have the opportunity to go beyond city limits.
Despite all of their socio-economic disadvantages, they are constantly surprising me with their creativity and desire to "be better" than where they come from. Students that successfully complete their 9th grade year have a higher chance of graduating on time. It is our desire to inspire our 9th graders and encourage them to complete their high school education. Because of lack of funds, field trips are limited so this would be a great opportunity to give our students a reward for all their hard work and sacrifice.
My Project
Students will be able to see and hear the story of Malala through her perspective. Afterward, my students will participate in a Socratic Seminar to discuss how Malala was able to over come so many obstacles and focus on helping others. Students will also write a reflection piece in which they think about and respond to the film. More importantly, the film will allow them to broaden their understanding of the value of education around the world. Often times they take their education for granted and fail to realize what opportunities education can afford them.
I hope that the film and Malala's experience speaks to students on a deeper level.
Ideally, students will walk away feeling better about themselves and the world, and they will realize that they do matter and that they can make a difference. Additionally, I hope that it inspires them to do their best in anything they do.
