My Students

As part of a revolutionary year for Ethnic Studies in San Francisco, I’m urging my students to take action! I want my students to realize that even in the face of adversity, their voice matters. The goal this year is developing our PRAXIS, taking our beliefs and turning it into action.

My students are intelligent, full of energy, and multifaceted in their backgrounds.

The diversity in the classroom is represented by different cultures, ethnicities, and socioeconomic status. But after years of the institutionalization of school, some of my students have unfortunately been silenced and relegated to compliance. Many are trying to find themselves and their place in the world as they are in their last year of transitioning from a child to an adult. They are curious and encouraged to question everything around them, including the people who educate them. My students are involved in their community, often volunteering at various events and charities to improve the lives of others. They are aware of social issues many children their age would not show interest in, and engage in rich conversations about possible solutions.

My Project

We have been discussing identity in class for the past month. They have been exploring their identities and the importance of sharing their experiences. They have also learned the danger of a single story, how this breeds stereotypes and generalized images of specific groups of people. Through this period, students have learned of various groups of people that have been dehumanized, marginalized, and oppressed, but also lessons of liberation through communal action. This movie screening will be an incredible supplement to the curriculum. My students will learn of the struggles Malala Yousafzai endured in Pakistan under the Taliban regime, and how she found the courage to speak out even after being threatened and shot at by the Taliban. They are going to draw from her experiences to develop a project they are passionate about and implement this to bring change to their community.

The experience of this film will provide my students with an unforgettable message of resiliency and strength.

Being able to view this film with their ethnic studies class will encourage my students to carefully observe and scrutinize the world around them. They will be motivated to get out into their communities and speak out against injustice through the example of Malala Yousafzai.
