Hawaiian Literature for 4th grade Language Arts

My students need 26 books to improve literacy and learn more about the Hawaiian culture, and "I Choose You" is a perfect book for 4th graders transitioning to a chapter book.

My Students

My students love to read about the Hawaiian Culture. My biggest challenge is finding appropriate literature for their reading level. The book "I Choose You" fills this need perfectly. This book was also nominated for a 2010 Ka Palapala Po’okela Award.

My students are a blend of many cultures.

This is what I love about teaching in Hawaii. My school is located on a tiny secluded island that makes obtaining materials challenging. I love seeing my students make personal connections with local literature that they can relate to.

My Project

We will read "I Choose You" as a class and use this excellent novel as a base for our Language Arts lessons. I teach 4th grade social studies, which is learning about the early Hawaiians. The students will learn that their culture is important, the stories, myths, and oral histories are passed down through many generations. The students will also compare Hawaii with another city in another country (Paris, France) as the main characters travel to Paris and share stories and dance from their Halau Hula (Hula dance school) with the people they meet in Paris.

Donating to this project will help my students read culturally relevant stories based on activities they participate in on a daily basis.

They will be motivated to read a book that is about Hawaii and this motivation will translate into improved literacy. We will also be able to make connections in Social Studies, discussing the idea of "culture", how it more than just language, food, and dance.
