My students need 5 sets of puili, a Hawaiian rhythm instrument, along with a CD which comes with puili songs and instructions.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Farrand's classroom raised $175
This project is fully funded
I am the general music teacher to over 600 enthusiastic young musicians at 2 elementary schools. The student population at the schools is diverse and representative of the urban, Midwestern city the school is located in. Music classes for students in grades K-2 include singing, dancing, and performing on instruments in addition to listening to and evaluating music. I also teach students about the theoretical, cultural, and historical aspects of music at an age appropriate level.
Students are most enthusiastic about music when they are moving and actively engaged in music class. I am seeking to build a collection of world rhythm instruments which will be used by the students in grades K-5 at my 2 schools. The instruments will be used by students while they explore the musical elements of beat, melody, tempo, dynamics, and harmony. Students will play in ensembles using the instruments using composed songs, improvised songs, and songs which the students compose.
For this proposal I am requesting the Hawaiian instrument rhythm instrument called the puili. The puili is a dried piece of bamboo that has been split into 2, and traditionally accompanies hula dancing. The puili musicians hit 2 puili against each other in rhythmic patterns. For this project I am requesting one set of puili for each school I work at, in addition to one CD of Hawaiian songs and an activity guide which describes the rhythmic movements which accompany the songs. The requested items will be used in lessons planned along the National Music Education Standards and will be reused by music students at my schools for years. Thank you for your generosity!
